Rural Carnival
Also known as Baserriz-Baserri this rural carnival parades through rural areas, villages and farmhouses near Irun on a specific Saturday.
Women wear the traditional regional dancer’s dress, decorate their sleeves with red and blue zig-zagged ribbons and sew bells onto their skirts. Men wear a white shirt and trousers decorated with red and blue ribbons in a diamond pattern. To finish off they wear a red sash and beret and a patterned neckerchief.
Men and women dance fandangos and arin-arin at the entrance to the farmhouses. Afterwards, they are traditionally given food, normally from the farm …eggs, pork products cider etc.
Carnival troupes
During carnival weekend over twenty troupes go out into the city and fill the streets with joy and colour.
